Chapter Chapter 3 in Financial Inclusion and the Role of Banking System, 2022, pp 37-103 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The banking sector has undergone several reforms over time. Banks, as financial intermediaries, have operated over the years to fulfill the financial and social obligations amid the varied regulatory reforms and restructurings. This chapter concentrates upon the status of financial inclusion. The purpose of this chapter is to elaborate on the role of banks in financial inclusion and its major milestones in India. It further presents various trends in the dimensions of financial inclusion. Additionally, a comparative study of the present Indian scenario and global financial inclusion status has also been depicted. In the second part, a brief review of studies of the Indian region and interrelation of the Indian region with other countries has been presented together from 1997. Thus, the chapter lays down theoretical foundation of empirical investigation and carves out the area of research within the existing literature. Research gaps were identified and a case for the present study has been built in the end.
