Chapter Chapter 9 in Korean Wave in South Asia, 2022, pp 187-207 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The spread of the Korean Wave in Sri Lanka within a short period merits academic discussion because historical and cultural links between South Korea and Sri Lanka are thin, and Sri Lankan culture is heavily influenced by Indian and colonial European cultures. This chapter examines the socio-cultural dynamics of the Korean Wave in Sri Lanka, delving into the origin, spread, and landmark moments of the Wave, local reception and consumption, influence on the cultural status quo, characteristics and types of audiences, and the future of this cultural phenomenon. The discussion shows that Sri Lanka was first introduced to the Korean Wave through Korean TV shows dubbed in local languages and aired on local television channels, which gained massive popularity among local audiences and laid the foundation to absorb more Korean cultural products. The chapter concludes that despite the challenges, the Korean Wave is breaking through to younger audiences, challenging the status quo enjoyed by Indian and American cultural products, and changing the entertainment consumption patterns in Sri Lanka.
