Abstract:
Abstract Home-grown food plays an important role in enhancing food security in developing counties. The analysis in this chapter reveals that there are substantial economies of scale in the consumption of home-grown food, which is a time-intensive alternative source of nutrition to market purchased food. The magnitude of these economies of scale in home-grown food is larger than those found in market-purchased food. Moreover, the chapter also provides empirical evidence that consumption of food grown at home is associated with higher per-capita calorie consumption. Therefore, those households who are inclined to consume more home-grown food appear to be nutritionally better off compared to those households who tend to consume more purchased food.
