Access to Electricity, Technology Adoption and Consumption Economies of Scale
Maneka Jayasinghe
Chapter Chapter 5 in Poverty, Food Consumption, and Economic Development, 2022, pp 63-80 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines, both theoretically and empirically, the role of domestic technology adoption, facilitated by electricity access in enhancing food consumption economies of scale. The empirical results reveal that technological adoption in the domestic sphere enables households to harvest greater food consumption economies scale and thereby stretch their food dollar. The results on poverty estimates reveal that when appropriate adjustments are made to allow for the possibilities of economies of scale in food consumption, the percentage of poor households appears to decline significantly.
