Symmetric Decompositions of Aggregate Output and Labour Productivity Growth: On Levels, (Non-)Additivity, and Misallocation
Bert Balk
Chapter Chapter 2 in Advances in Economic Measurement, 2022, pp 105-127 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, symmetric decompositions for aggregate output (= real value added) growth and labour productivity growth are derived in terms of levels. The usual neo-classical assumptions can therewith be avoided. The assumption of additivity provides a convenient backdrop for a discussion of several concepts of (measuring) labour misallocation. The chapter concludes with a comparison of two methods for enforcing additivity on non-additive data.
