Chapter Chapter 11 in Energy of the Russian Arctic, 2022, pp 207-232 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The purpose of this article is to convey a brief overview of the experience of two pipeline experts who have dedicated their professional careers to monetizing hydrocarbon resources in cold regions, such as the Arctic. The article will be no help to those who are already working in the Arctic, but is intended to enlighten anyone that is considering investing or working there. The major hazards and the overall challenges are identified, although it would take many volumes to explain thoroughly all the lessons to learn about the climate, the permafrost challenges, and the measures needed to protect the habitat of the special species that have evolved in the Arctic and can survive there with ease. There are two attachments on practical guiding field reconnaissance and data truthing for pipelines routes.
