Abstract:
Abstract The Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) have played an essential role in the livelihoods of tribal and rural communities. NTFPs being an unorganized sector, pose various constraints to the collectors and one of the significant issues is the market chain. In this study, the market chain of three NTFPs was analyzed, and the constraints faced by the NTFP collectors in the Jharkhand state of India were identified. 387 NTFP collectors were interviewed in 62 villages through a questionnaire survey. The results highlighted that the NTFP collectors have been facing various constraints in marketing their NTFPs. The primary constraints faced were the monopoly of the middlemen and traders in price fixation of NTFPs, lack of market information and awareness, lack of sufficient transport facilities, transportation cost and improper weighing practices. Further, this study also identifies various initiatives based on the respondent’s responses that can be utilized to reduce the marketing constraints in NTFPs.
