A chapter in Industry 4.0 and the Digital Transformation of International Business, 2023, pp 33-68 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Digitalisation is a pervasive phenomenon that is increasingly influencing entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship. Studies on the topic are at their early stage and appear to be currently fragmented. Intending to contribute to the emergent debate, this chapter proposes a Systematic Literature Review based on articles published between 1990 and 2020 in leading journals and retrieved in the WoS database. Searching through the keywords “entrepreneurship” and “intrapreneurship,” the database offered 45,538 results; searching “digital era and digitalisation” 340,030 results; and combining the mentioned keywords 975 results; finally, after subsequent refinements, the dataset provided 141 articles. The selected articles were analysed to understand the evolution of this research field in the last 30 years, the main countries/regions sensitive on the theme, the journals most interested in published studies on the topic, and the most prolific authors. The content was analysed in-depth to identify methods used, main theories, and common themes. This chapter provides an integrative picture of state of the art and a future research agenda of the literature on entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship in the digital era, helping scholars understand the wave of existent contributions and suggest future studies. Specifically, in identifying the main trends in the literature and providing future research directions, our critical and dynamic picture of entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship in the digital era is intended to advance both the debates on entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship and digitalisation studies.
