Chapter Chapter 4 in Understanding China's Economy, 2021, pp 67-80 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Long considered China's most defining characteristic, its colossal population has been the source of many of the ideas that drive policy. However, this population has also long been a source of a multitude of misunderstandings. Its evolving nature has hindered our ability to accurately judge our stage of economic development, and from which make the right decisions on economic and social policy. This chapter will delve into several mainstream opinions on China's population, as well as the relationship between demography and the economy based on the fruit of author's own long term research. It will also provide an overview of new theories, as well as new empirical evidence for analysis, and rectify these misunderstandings.
