Abstract: Abstract Sustainability in manufacturing, being one of the key characteristics of any kind of manufacturing system, requires an approach of environmental management practices as a proactive approach for improving performance of processes and products. Establishment of an environmental performance measurement system in this context is essential for management and control of various kinds of resources and processes in use and their impact on external environment on a continuous basis. This ensures sustainable business performance in long term. In this paper, several existing approaches of environmental performance measurement systems are critically appraised which may be required to develop a comprehensive and integrated generic framework for evaluating the environmental performance of the manufacturing organizations.
