Chapter Chapter 1 in Resilience in the Hospitality and Travel Industry in Africa, 2026, pp 3-13 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides the context in which the book ‘Resilience in Hospitality and Tourism in Africa’ is written and has highlights of the rest of the book. The tourism and hospitality industry globally has so many challenges. The chapter provides an overview of the importance of tourism and the challenges affecting the industry. Peer-reviewed articles and book chapters were consulted in data collection and synthesis thereof. Content and thematic analyses were applied. The study found the challenges are political, economic, social, technological, ecological, legal, and international factors. Possible resilience strategies discussed include risk management, promotion elements, coping ability, protective dimensions, relationship and supportive marketing structures, innovation and growth mindset, and robust and resolute engagements. The study implies that for resilience strategies to be properly implemented there is a need to understand fundamental challenges bedeviling the tourism and hospitality industry. Proper evaluation and monitoring of resilience strategies yields sectoral profits, and promotes and enhances the industry and corporate image, while competitive advantage is guaranteed and positioning as the most preferred service provider occupies the market mindset.
