Chapter Chapter 2 in Knowledge Management, 2026, pp 29-43 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract A knowledge culture enables and motivates its employees to create, share, and utilize knowledge, which can uphold enduring organizational success. When crafted judiciously, it can effectively leverage an organization’s intellectual assets. This invaluable intellectual capital, arising from an effective knowledge culture, can enable an organization to sustain competitive advantage in a technologically enabled, turbulent, and dynamic business environment. The cultural components—in the form of physical attributes, business processes, and temporal attributes (visible artifacts); leadership values, social relationships of trust, and open communication (espoused values); and positive orientation toward life-long learning, holistic growth, and abundance mindset (basic underlying assumptions) influence the development of an effective knowledge culture. The chapter first highlights the challenges posed by digital technologies, the increasing skills gap, and gig work, among other issues, in the contemporary work environment. It highlights the impact of cultural aspects, such as artifacts, espoused values, and assumptions, on knowledge culture. Discusses various individual, team, and organizational-level factors, such as developing an environment of growth, trust, motivation, and managerial support, that facilitate the development of an effective knowledge culture. These factors, which enable an effective knowledge culture, will thus facilitate contemporary organizations’ journey toward organizational excellence.
