Chapter Chapter 9 in Knowledge Management, 2026, pp 171-191 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The chapter synthesises the literature on metrics and measurements of knowledge management (KM) in research and practice. This chapter addresses the crucial role of metrics in ensuring the effective implementation of KM systems in organisations. The first section begins with a definition of KM, emphasising the importance of metrics in measuring and enhancing KM effectiveness. The second section focuses on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), addressing core aspects such as knowledge creation, sharing, application, and storage. The third section discusses the KPIs and metrics in knowledge management literature at three levels of analysis in an organisation—micro, meso, and macro. The fourth section summarises the KM metrics used in the literature into quantitative and qualitative approaches and discusses different data collection methods. The fifth section highlights the challenges of KM metrics provided by the intangible nature of knowledge, cultural obstacles, and dynamic knowledge value. The sixth section examines future trends, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, real-time analytics, and the integration of KM metrics with comprehensive business intelligence tools, paving the way for advanced KM metrics. Lastly, to conclude this chapter, the seventh section discusses the importance of continuous improvement of metrics and measurements of KM. With this chapter, we seek to provide practitioners and scholars with actionable insights to assess and enhance the knowledge in tangible form.
