Chapter Chapter 1 in Cooperatives and the Market Economy, 2025, pp 3-23 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter argues that modern cooperatives emerged in the wake of the Industrial Revolution to cope with the problems brought about by capitalism. It also discusses how these problems were addressed by the government toward the end of the twentieth century. Based on these examinations, we reevaluate the role that cooperatives could play in the contemporary market economy.
