Abstract:
Abstract Business leaders in the workplace could be compared to orchestra conductors who guide, coordinate, and motivate musicians to perform their best. However, leaders cannot rely on one specific, fixed style, such as a waltz, when the external environment begins to change. Instead, the organization should shift to a “jazz” style because, for organizations in highly volatile and uncertain environments, leaders often have no “music score” to follow. They must assume the roles of composer, performer, and conductor and “improvise” to cope with a series of changes. In the management and organization literature, scholars have called these behaviors “organizational improvisation” or “impromptu behavior.”
