Chapter Chapter 6 in Japanese and German Enterprises, 2024, pp 129-167 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Following World War II, the European and Japanese enterprises, industries, and their economies were developed by deploying and adapting US technology and management methods. In addition, American management methods were deployed and implemented under the United States-led productivity movement. The major American management methods implemented in Japan and Germany were for management education. However, in both nations, many factors influenced the introduction of American management education. Therefore, this chapter discusses the deployment of American management education in relation to universities’ roles in such education, government agencies, eligibility criteria for executive management, and the managerial promotion system in enterprises. American initiatives in management education reform, universities’ roles in management education, the deployment of Training within Industry (TWI), and other top management education methods are also considered. First, this chapter examines the deployment of American management education in Japan, followed by a discussion of such deployment in Germany. Based on these discussions, Japanese and German characteristics are clarified to identify various factors restricting the deployment of American-style methods in management education.
