Chapter Chapter 5 in China: The Great Transition, 2023, pp 87-117 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter analyses the impact of the new coronavirus on the profitability of banks in China. It argues that the new coronavirus had a significant impact on banks’ return on capital and non-performing loan ratios, but not on capital adequacy ratios. This proves that although the COVID-19 outbreak has led to a severe economic decline, the banking sector as a whole is still manageable through policy changes and the control of the outbreak.
