Chapter Chapter 4 in Cleaning and Corporate Management, 2023, pp 47-60 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter turns to a theoretical exploration of the relationship between cleaning and management with reference to quantitative data, qualitative research results, and the latest theoretical trends concerning Japanese companies today. In particular, it explores the significance of cleaning and the issues it raises for theory and methodology in management studies. This chapter cites questionnaire results showing that companies gain an array of benefits through regular cleaning practices and that there are therefore advantages in having employees clean rather than hiring outside contractors. Analyzing these results reveals that the philosophy of pragmatism—the paradigm that says that actions move people and guide the mind—can deepen our understanding of why the cleaning practiced by Japanese companies has the utility that it does.
