Abstract:
Abstract This chapter provides a comparative view of the four merger attempts, primarily considering the similarities and differences that affected failure of the merger attempts. This comparative view is provided to enable viewing these attempts from a macro perspective. A common theme across all merger attempts was that the leaders of the Institute presumably believed that their membership would support the merger proposal or could at least be persuaded to do so. However, the votes revealed, except perhaps for the third merger attempt where the voting was very close, that this presumption was seriously in error.
