Chapter Chapter 19 in Currency and Credit Money, 2026, pp 193-200 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter analyzes Justi’s strict metallist theory, emphasizing money as a commodity and store of value. He criticizes coin debasement and rejects nominal value concepts, arguing that discrepancies between metal and nominal value cause economic disorder. Justi focuses on monetary stability and advocates full-value coinage, opposing seigniorage as a fiscal tool. He links monetary policy to broader economic development, emphasizing circulation and trade. This chapter highlights his conservative and stability-oriented approach, rooted in cameralist thought, and his resistance to emerging monetary innovations, such as paper money and credit systems.
