Chapter Chapter 20 in Currency and Credit Money, 2026, pp 201-209 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores Müller’s romantic and holistic theory of money, which integrates economic, legal, and social dimensions. He distinguishes between metal money and “Wortgeld” (credit money), emphasizing their interdependence. Müller views money as an expression of social unity and state authority, rejecting individualistic and purely economic interpretations. He develops a sociological and nominalist perspective while maintaining a role for commodity money. This chapter highlights his critique of classical economics and his emphasis on balance between monetary forms, positioning him within a broader social-legal tradition of monetary thought.
