Chapter Chapter 1 in Healthcare Analytics, 2026, pp 3-9 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter introduces readers to the constituents of a health care system and explains the different types of insurers and payers in the US healthcare system. It also presents a comparison of healthcare expenditures and life expectancy at birth among G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain, and USA) based on OECD data. It explains that nearly 60% of all healthcare expenditures in the USA come from federal, state, and local governments. The remaining 40% are private expenditures. Students are often surprised to learn this split.
