Chapter Chapter 10 in Healthcare Analytics, 2026, pp 77-90 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract After introducing the overall patient flow through an ED, this chapter divides the patient experience into three parts: arrival to first provider contact, first provider contact to disposition, and disposition to discharge. It contains a case study, based on real data, to illustrate how hospital managers may use data to support staffing decisions. The relevant technical materials can be found in technical notes A.2 and A.3 on queueing theory and linear programming, respectively. The technical parts may be skipped as needed. Qualitative discussion of the case study is possible without going deeper into the technical content.
