Chapter Chapter 3 in Healthcare Analytics, 2026, pp 15-19 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Many students in an undergraduate class may be unfamiliar with common insurance terms like deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and recognized amount. This chapter introduces these concepts. It refers to a publicly available explanation-of-benefits statement and presents worked-out problems that can help students appreciate how most healthcare providers get paid in the USA. Instructors may supplement this chapter with assigned readings on recent trends in healthcare payment reform. Instructors may also either skip this chapter or assign it as self-study for students who are familiar with common insurance terms.
