Abstract In the following section the main features of the highly complex American healthcare system will be exhibited. The section will focus on the multiple payers for healthcare services existing in the United States and borrow heavily from various authors (see Niles 2011; Sultz and Young 2010; Davidson 2010; Greenwald 2010; Shi and Singh 2013; Jonas et al. 2007; Katz 2006; Kovner and Knickman 2005; Haase 2005; Anderson et al. 2003; Hsiao 2002; Dranove 2002).
