Chapter Chapter 4 in Internal Migration as a Life-Course Trajectory, 2022, pp 65-81 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter presents ten cohort measures that capture four dimensions of migration, its level, progression, timing and spacing. For each measure, definitions and mathematical formulae are accompanied by worked examples. These measures have the advantage of being conceptually transparent, intuitively meaningful and easy to compute. Of particular interest are order-specific measures, such as migration progression ratios, which permit analysis of migration as an incremental process. By deconstructing the underlying timing of migration, these indicators provide important insights into patterns of migration change. The chapter also outlines inter-relations between these measures and presents a simple method to mathematically decompose the level of migration into five components (mean age at first migration, mean age at last migration, mean interval between consecutive migrations, proportion of one-time migrants and proportion of repeat migrants). A counterfactual approach can then be employed to estimate the percentage change in the level of lifetime migration attributable to each component in relation to a birth cohort of reference. The methods presented in this chapter can be applied either to population register or retrospective survey data to compare changes in migration behaviour between birth cohorts, countries or any socio-demographic groups of interest. They offer multidimensional information about the migration trajectory of successive birth cohorts and, together, they provide a new approach for exploring the demographic mechanisms underpinning variations in migration behaviour.
