Chapter Chapter 8 in Social Choice and Democratic Values, 2016, pp 431-437 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The final chapter tries to pull the various threads together. While the theory of social choice does not force us to face a dramatic choice between “dictatorship and democratic chaos”, or between “liberalism and populism” it has interesting connections to political philosophy. The social choice results are potentially relevant for the discussion on the virtues and vices of different real-life democratic mechanisms, and some traditional, non-technical problems of political philosophy may actually be seen as instances of the more general problems revealed by the theory of social choice. Sometimes it is able to show that the problems have no “solution”, rather they should be seen as trade-offs between different values embodied in democratic institutions.
