Chapter Chapter 13 in Standard of Living, 2022, pp 297-308 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The New Testament describes “religion that is pure and undefiled” as consisting of “care for orphans and widows in their distress.” This essay surveys the demography of orphans and widows in the Greco-Roman world and considers how the economic ramifications of these realities in early Christian communities can help interpreters make sense of otherwise opaque biblical texts.
