Abstract:
Abstract This paper examines causes for the lack of growth in smart cities in the USA. It also explores possible alternative business models, inspired from platform economics, for successful PO smart city partnerships. Finally, it investigates how the relative strictness of the USO definition could improve or hinder the prospects of POs providing services to smart cities. The lessons learned from the US example can be applied to POs around the world facing similar choices. To gather information on current developments in smart cities initiatives and technologies, in-depth interviews were conducted with subject matter experts from related fields to supplement other research performed.
