Target2-Salden: Datenquellen und Informationsgehalt als Krisenindikator

Sven Steinkamp ()

Wirtschaftsdienst, 2014, vol. 94, issue 12, 892-897

Abstract: In recent months, policymakers have repeatedly referred to the declining Target2 balances as an important indicator of progress toward ending the euro crisis. This data is, however, still not readily available to the public. We therefore provide hands-on advice on where to find the data necessary to calculate the Target2 balances. Furthermore, we point out that the downward trend of Target2 balances should be interpreted with caution. Nearly a quarter of their decline can be attributed to the payments by different financial assistance mechanisms. Taking into account these official capital flows, at least Greece and Portugal seem not to have overcome their balance of payments difficulties yet.
