Reimagining engagement: A communication framework for engaged research

Abstract: Engaged research entails collaboration between academics, community members, and other stakeholders to facilitate mutually beneficial research, with communication being central to this process. However, existing engaged research frameworks often rely on fragmented engagement. This study addresses this gap by conceptualizing an Engaged Research Communication (ERC) framework to support continuous engagement. The ERC was developed through a multi-step process: (1) a literature study on engaged research principles; (2) integration of these principles into the Mutual Sustainability Communication (MSC) framework; (3) evaluation through an engaged research case study and critical reflection. Insights from this reflection, combined with theory, informed the adaptation of the MSC into the ERC framework. The resulting ERC framework positions communication as an ongoing process that fosters co-creation of knowledge, co-learning, capacity building, and ownership, thereby advancing mutual empowerment and sustainable reciprocity.
