Policy and legal framework for the spatial development of the extractive industry in Greece

Abstract: The global need for safe supply of mineral raw materials leads to the need for an effective spatial planning. Within this context, this paper investigates the existing policy and legal tools of the Greek institutional system in order to assess their effectiveness for the development of the extractive industry with a view to identifying additional necessary interventions. The problems identified call for the enactment of a special spatial framework for the extractive industry. The framework appears as a means to ensure the future of the extraction industry and to improve its public image.
