Abstract:
As an important instrument to achieve carbon neutrality and sustainable development, circular economy has been high on the agenda of many countries. However, research on the application of the circular economy idea rarely involves the dimensions of urban development and spatial planning. This paper introduces the application of circular economy principles in the regeneration project of Guanzhou community, located in the urban-rural fringe of Guangzhou, China. Circular economy methods that were employed in the project include: (1) material circularity; (2) circular designs, and (3) circular assessment. We explain the application of circular economy in urban development, and evaluate its positive impacts and limitations.
