Parallels and divergences: a thematic reading of degrowth and shrinkage literatures

Abstract: Having worked ethnographically with planners and residents in rural areas experiencing diminishing resources and population decline, we see a need to distinguish two scholarly fields, degrowth and shrinkage. They could be practically useful in addressing the challenges of these areas but are sometimes confused or used interchangeably. We aim therefore to provide an accessible thematic reading of the two literatures, highlighting their parallels, divergences, and potential utility for local planning. We use key literature from the two fields to illustrate their conceptualisation of growth, historical context, normative foundations, and knowledge contributions of the two literatures. We also identify opportunities for mutual learning.
