Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, 2021, vol. 50, issue 20, 4778-4786

Abstract: The problem of determining the joint probability of a pair of random variables from the knowledge of the distribution of the individual distributions comes up in many practical situations, and has been studied from many points of view. In this note we analyze some theoretical aspects related to the use of the method of maximum entropy in the mean to solve this problem. As we shall see, that besides providing a solution, the method has the capability of incorporating in a systematic way, several forms of prior knowledge about the probabilities to be determined.
