Navigating environmental sustainability in inland waterway transport: emission challenges and solutions

Abstract:
Emissions from inland waterway transport (IWT) have a significantly higher local impact than those from ocean-going shipping, yet have not been equally studied. This paper reviews the key research topics in IWT environmental emission studies since 2000, highlighting the current challenges and the future prospects. The findings reveal that existing models for estimating IWT emissions require significant improvement, and government and industry measures to mitigate IWT emissions are still insufficient. In particular, the lack of financial incentives and comprehensive economic analyses hinders the widespread adoption of emission reduction strategies. Addressing these issues is crucial for promoting the environmental sustainability of IWT.
