Regional Studies, 2025, vol. 59, issue 1, 2435526

Abstract: This study explores company diversification processes triggered by the shortage of COVID-19 products in Spain during the pandemic. The phenomenon is interpreted through the lens of ‘regional opportunity spaces’. Regional preconditions (e.g., industry relatedness) and change agency are also explored, confirming the decisive influence of the former dimensions. The study was conducted from a multi-scalar perspective using mixed methods which included a skill-relatedness approach based on historical data and semi-structured interviews with firm managers and other representatives from sectoral associations and regional technology centres. Implications for regional development and resilience are discussed.
