Abstract:
This paper explores three exemplar place-based initiatives (PBIs), Logan Together (Australia), Living SJ (Canada) and The Southern Initiative (TSI) (New Zealand), to identify place leaders and the practices they enact alone, and together, to drive well-being-focused change. Drawing from interviews with 37 informants, four types of leadership actors are identified: the PBI; individuals within PBIs and contributing organisations; residents; and elected representatives. Their respective place leadership practices and experiences are described. After revealing what helps and hinders multi-actor and place-driven leadership, a novel conceptual framework is developed, and recommendations are made for advancing place leadership research, policy and practice to improve well-being.
