Putting design justice at the center of ICT4D

Abstract:
In this editorial, I advance the point that a design justice perspective constitutes an important addition to the conceptual armory of ICT for Development (ICT4D) research. This perspective illuminates how injustice, rather than arising as an unintended consequence of inclusion into digital systems, can be directly embedded in the design of sociotechnical artifacts. At the same time, it enables us to imagine routes to infuse justice into artifacts’ architecture, as illustrated by recent works in and beyond the ICT4D discipline. I first illustrate a design justice perspective and its potential for ICT4D, then introduce the seven papers published in this issue.
