Abstract:
AI-generated images, audio, video, and text are now part of the information environment students encounter every day. Students increasingly face claims that look credible while remaining misleading, incomplete, or difficult to trace to a reliable source (Chesney & Citron, 2019; Vaccari & Chadwick, 2020). This article argues that social studies inquiry is especially well suited to these conditions when teachers make verification a normal classroom habit rather than a separate technology lesson. It introduces the VERIFY Cycle, paired with a brief Verification Trail, as a practical routine that helps students identify claims, check them across sources, and explain the evidence behind their conclusions (Wineburg & McGrew, 2019). Five classroom snapshots drawn from elementary community studies, media literacy, Nevada civics, U.S. history, and world history show how verification can be built into existing units. Used consistently, these routines strengthen civic judgment while also supporting critical thinking, information literacy, communication, collaboration, and decision-making under conditions of uncertainty (NCSS, 2013).
