Abstract: This study examines the motivations and learning challenges of 100 students pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in English at Thu Dau Mot University, Vietnam. Using a descriptive quantitative survey, the findings show that students are primarily motivated by employment needs (77%) and international communication (89%), while cultural understanding (61%) and career advancement (28%) are also important motives. However, limited study time (84%), weak foundational knowledge (53%), grammar (64%), and pronunciation difficulties (63%) constrain learning engagement. The findings highlight the need for flexible, communicative, and adult-oriented approaches to second-degree English education in Vietnam.
