Abstract: This paper analyses the 1981 demonstrations in Kosovo as a turning point in political thought and examines their relationship to the wider Yugoslav crisis and to Kosovo’s ties with Albania. Rather than treating the demonstrations as a direct cause of Yugoslavia’s dissolution, it argues that they returned the Kosovo question to the centre of Yugoslav and Albanian political debate. Particular attention is devoted to the claim that official Belgrade orchestrated the demonstrations. The paper maintains that this thesis was initially promoted clandestinely by segments of Kosovo’s Albanian communist elite to delegitimise the demonstrators’ demands and justify the state repression carried out together with other Yugoslav communists, particularly those from Serbia. The paper further examines the demonstrations’ long-term effects: the renewed contestation of Yugoslavia as a political project, the interruption of the Yugoslavisation of Kosovo’s Albanian communist elite, and the revival of political and national ties with Albania. It concludes that the demonstrations were a turning point that strengthened the orientation towards Kosovo’s independence and helped shape the political processes of 1989–1999.
