Abstract:
Public safety at the community level remains a crucial concern, particularly in ensuring effective crime prevention and peacekeeping. This study examined the strategies employed by Barangay Tanods in promoting public safety in Barangay Poblacion, La Trinidad, Benguet. It aimed to identify existing community-based safety strategies, assess their effectiveness, and propose evidence-based recommendations to enhance public safety practices. The study is significant as it contributes to the improvement of grassroots peacekeeping and supports the development of more responsive public safety policies. A qualitative research design was utilized, involving ten Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team members as participants. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically to capture recurring patterns and insights regarding their roles and experiences. Findings revealed that proactive strategies such as regular patrols, visibility, teamwork, and effective communication significantly contribute to crime prevention and community trust. However, challenges including limited resources, insufficient manpower, non-compliance of some residents, and physical and emotional strain were identified as constraints to their effectiveness. Despite these, Barangay Tanods demonstrated strong commitment and adaptability in fulfilling their duties. The study concludes that while Barangay Tanods are vital in maintaining public safety, strengthening institutional support is necessary to maximize their effectiveness. The findings fill gaps in understanding grassroots-level policing strategies and highlight the importance of community engagement. Practically, the study suggests enhancing training, providing adequate resources, and improving policy support to ensure sustainable and effective public safety efforts.
