Abstract: The modern world is characterized by accelerated changes at all levels of society. The higher education system is not an exception. On the contrary, the University, as a higher education institution, must anticipate and react to changes that occur on multiple dimensions, representing a component without which education would be inconsistent and would lack resistance to political, economic and social changes. The basic function of an effective higher education system is to provide society with flexible, mobile and accessible workforce, able to apply the skills requested by the local, regional, national and international labour market. Moreover, today, the university cannot be limited to space. The process of regionalization and globalization requires higher education to create a new type of educational system, which is not possible without the development of a competitive higher education. The present article comes up with some research on the internationalization of universities in the age of globalization, the faced challenges and the general trends. Analysing some general points, we refer to the internationalization of higher education the Republic of Moldova and the experience of the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova.
