Abstract: Business ecosystems concept emerged and gained high attention from researchers and practitioners as well. This paper aims to present the linkage between business ecosystem architecture and its performance through business ecosystem’s health assessment. According to the late findings in this field, business ecosystem’s health can be defined through established strategic roles of business ecosystem: keystones, niche players, dominators and hub landlords. Thus it is important to understand and define them considering the life cycle of business ecosystem as well. From this point of view in this paper will be conducted a critical analysis of the most important theories of business ecosystem’s health assessment. The foreseen result of this analysis is to identify existing roles, to fill the gaps between theories and to redefine the business ecosystem’s roles according to the author’s vision. Also this analysis will provide important insights for future research on development and performance assessment of the business ecosystem.
