Abstract:
The road safety challenges in African countries are enormous. Appropriate and proactive public policies are needed to prevent the situation from worsening and to save a significant number of lives. UNECA has developed an action plan based on several pillars and an assessment to determine whether certain road safety measures are being taken by African countries... The aim is to encourage the implementation of new measures. Halfway through the action plan, the expected results are not forthcoming and are even disappointing. The SaferAfrica research, which aims to contribute to the improvement of the road safety situation in Africa, included the definition of a framework for updating the evaluation of the UNECA Action Plan. Using a detailed questionnaire, respondents completed a large number of items allowing for an up-to-date assessment of the policies implemented. . This article describes in detail the used approach and methodology, and provides an analysis of the results and some recommendations.. The results show progress in some pillars, but little improvement in many others. Finally, the challenges remain unresolved and require the implementation of effective policies.
