Abstract: Abstract: The objective of this paper is to analyze the historical conformation of capitalism, highlighting the key distinctive elements of each of its phases. Therefore, following to the periodicity proposed by Mandel (1982) and critical analysis of Marx (1988) about capitalism, we discuss the commercial, classical and imperialist phases. The last section provides notes for discussion of contemporary capitalism that is strongly influenced by the crisis of 1970 (with the neoliberal ideology and the corresponding practice as its most important response). Finally, we assess, in a preliminary way, if neoliberalism determines a new phase of capitalism.
