Abstract: This paper aims to estimate the Okun’s Law for the Brazilian economy using the data from IBGE to quarterly values of the national and industrial Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from 1996 to 2013 and data from the Pesquisa Mensal de Emprego to the unemployment rates. The model used for the estimation is the gap model, which express how much the gap of the product relative to its potential affects the variation of the unemployment rate considering the nation as a whole and specifically the industrial sector. Thus, we can verify how sensible is the variation of the unemployment rate relative to the economic growth and from the coefficients’ significance confirm the statistical validity of the Okun’s Law in Brazil.
