Abstract:
In a context of regional educational and economic inequality, studies this inequality have gained importance in academia. The contribution of this work is to align the debate on these two issues in the Brazilian scenario and answer the following question: the spatial distribution characteristics of individuals and their families, known to affect the education of children and youth, are important determinants of high regional inequalities in education that are observed in Brazil? Using the methodology proposed by Juhn, Murphy and Pierce (1993), with PNAD data for the years 2004 and 2014, youth between 14 and 17 years, found that the main determinant of inequality is the response characteristics (difference in parameters) of young people and their families, that is, as these characteristics are transformed or converted into education. However, other individual characteristics such as mother and father with higher level of education, for example, contribute to reducing inequality and youth studying in a private school. Furthermore, educational inequality between regions is reduced over time.
