Abstract:
The present article aimed to analyze the determinants of demand for luxury goods imported by Brazil. To achieve this objective, more than one thousand imported goods were chosen after a preliminary research on brazilian imported Products NCM (Mercosur Common Nomenclature) Table. Two hypotheses about the determinants of demand were tested – price and income. Real Exchange rate and Growth Domestic Product (GDP) were used as proxy for price and income. Results shown that only income were statistically significant in determining the demand. The elasticity-direct income of demand was equal to 1.36 in short run and 1.89 in long run. The results are in consonance with economic theory, marketing theory and Leibenstein’s nonfunctional demand concept.
